Most portrait problems don’t come from detail.

They come from how the painting starts.

In this live session, I’ll walk you through how I approach proportions, placement, and composition, the stage where a portrait either holds together falls apart later.

This is a demonstration, not a paint-along.

I’ll be working on a larger painting that includes multiple portraits, so you can see how these decisions play out in a real piece.

In this session, I will show you:

How to place features with accuracy (without over-measuring)

How to avoid the most common proportion mistakes

How composition affects the entire portrait before painting even begins

I won’t be completing a full portrait in this session.

The focus is on building a strong foundation you can apply to your own work.

If your portraits feel slightly “off” and you can’t quite fix why, this is where that usually begins.👇

(Don't worry if you can't attend, you can still register and I'll send you the replay of the class)

HI, I'M RACHEL!

I am an emerging artist with a love for emotion and its visual expression.

My painting journey started in childhood, being mentored by the late Charles Cassar right into my late teens.

My fascination with the human form remained a constant and manifested itself into painting portraits with a particular focus on the emotional state. In my personal work, I attempt to capture a specific facial gesture, with the aim of using the imagery to transfer a mood, a message, or even a feeling.

I spend most of my time in my home studio, painting portrait commissions and expanding my personal body of work, exploring how human expression can be received and interpreted, versus how the subject intends to communicate its emotion.

Prepare for this webinar:

This session will be approximately 1 to 1.5 hours long and will focus on building a strong foundation before painting begins. Rather than completing a full portrait, we’ll concentrate on understanding placement, proportions, and composition.

You’ll learn how to place facial features accurately without over-measuring, avoid common proportion mistakes, and understand how composition shapes the entire portrait from the start.

That said, this is not structured as a paint-along, though you’re absolutely welcome to paint along if you wish. If you do, you can just lightly sketch as we go, and I will cover whatever i can during the timeframe.

The primary objective is to teach you my approach to ensuring proper proportion planning and placement

All key information will be shared, and a replay will be sent afterwards, so you can revisit the material and apply it at your own pace.
