Most painters draw the eye first. Sketch the outline, fill it in, add a pupil, and fill it in with colour.
There is a more organic way to do this but it requires skill and understanding. Tweaking your starting point will help, so your painting feels more developmental and less like a paint by numbers exercise.

I am an emerging artist with a love for emotion and its visual expression.
My painting journey started in childhood, being mentored by the late Charles Cassar right into my late teens.
My fascination with the human form remained a constant and manifested itself into painting portraits with a particular focus on the emotional state. In my personal work, I attempt to capture a specific facial gesture, with the aim of using the imagery to transfer a mood, a message, or even a feeling.
I spend most of my time in my home studio, painting portrait commissions and expanding my personal body of work, exploring how human expression can be received and interpreted, versus how the subject intends to communicate its emotion.

This session will be approximately 1.5 hours long and will focus on a different way of approaching one of the most challenging features to paint: the eye.
Rather than starting with outlines and details, we'll look at how to build the eye naturally from the structure beneath it. You'll see why understanding the eye socket, shadow shapes, and the form of the sphere leads to a far more convincing and lifelike result.
During the demonstration, I will explain how to let the eye emerge from the painting instead of drawing it in, how to mix the colours found in the reference, and what subtle decisions make an eye feel alive rather than flat or overworked.
This webinar is structured as a live demonstration, so there's no need to paint along during the session. You can simply observe the process, focus on the explanations, and take notes as we work through the painting together.
